Technology Blog #1: "Developing a Connected Learning Model" and How it Connects to my Career Choice

This week in "Exploring your Digital Portfolio" we were assigned to read Chapter 2 of Connected Educator. This chapter mainly focuses on the different models for sharing information in a workplace setting, specifically for teachers and educators. Even though it was centered around teachers, the information being told still rings true for all careers; you must work together as a team. It is important to work together so that you are more likely to succeed and better expand your knowledge as a professional in whichever field you are in.

The three main models provided in this chapter were: Professional Learning Communities (PLC), Personal Learning Networks (PLN), and Communities of Practice (CoP). The Communties of Practice sounded the most helpful for most jobs because it was described as being a constant sharing of information between individuals who all care about the same goal or passion. It was basically said that it is more useful to learn together and share different information together, rather than learning alone in isolation. I believe this is why team building exercises are taught from an early age, because so many careers require you to be a good team player and because it fosters a greater end result.

This chapter connected to my career choice/potential career choices because they all are deeply intertwined with other people and their ideas. Whether I choose a career in media production or advertising, they are both collaboration-heavy fields where you must share information and ideas with each other to succeed in whatever it is that you are creating. In my opinion, learning from other people and their experiences in something is one of the best ways to learn and grow as a person. You cannot work in a creative field and refuse to see different perspectives.

  1. Hi Kate! First off, whether you go into media production or advertising, I hope to see your work one day on TV. Yes, in this fields you do need to work together because each person on the set has an important role and in order for the shoot to come out right then eveyone has to be on the same page. Communities of practice does work well for your future career choice, since all of you have to work together and have a same goal at the end which is to have a perfect shoot.

  3. Hi Kate!
I had a great time reading your blog on Chapter 2. I agree with your points, especially how working together is such a huge part of basically every single career. It’s cool how the chapter focused on teachers but can be applied to all different jobs. It makes sense that sharing knowledge with people who have the same compassion as you can help everyone grow. Like you said, learning alone only gets you so far. Collaborations brings in new ideas and perspectives that on your own, you might’ve not thought of. Thanks for sharing your take on this chapter!
