Technology Blog #2: "Building your Connected Learning Community" and how it connects to my major
For this week's assignment, we were assigned to read chapter 6 of The Connected Educator. This chapter goes into how important it is to utilize personal learning networks (PLN) in your everyday life and in your career. Connecting with other people and sharing ideas is one of the best ways to learn, because you are constantly sharing new ideas or experiences that every individual person has. This chapter gives many different options of where exactly you can start/create your PLN, including Twitter and blog sites.

The section of this chapter that I found most interesting was the part about what makes a community healthy. I think anyone who wants to use a personal learning network in their career should really take notice of this part as it is the perfect structure for a community. When you have such a large group of people, you really do need to make sure that it is a safe place to share opinions and ideas without being criticized or judged. If everyone feels that their part in the group is valued, they will be much more encouraged to keep sharing.
As for how this chapter connects to my major and future career, I think that it connects to basically any career! Collaboration and teamwork is something that you are going to see in pretty much any field, as that is how you succeed in what you are doing. But for media production or advertising, (I feel like I say this in every assignment, I just don't know which I am going to stick with) those are two fields where working together is a must and you are constantly sharing ideas creatively. In addition to that, the best way to learn in those fields is by experience and actually doing the work.

Hi Kate! I really enjoyed reading your post. I especially liked how you mentioned that fact that for a community to be big and work it needs to be a safe space. This is important because the PLN being a safe will ensure that everyone is comfortable enough to share when their time comes with out the fear of being judged. I also like how you are able to connect to both of your potential careers by acknowledging you can gain knowledge and experience for both.
ReplyDeleteHi Kate,
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed reading post! I liked how you talked about healthy communities. People join these communities so they can feel heard, learn new things or get advice. These can go bad when the group don't have any of those things and can make sure feel unsafe. Its important for everyone to feel like they are part of the group just like you said.
Hi Kate,
ReplyDeleteI think you gave great insight, even without having a decided major. PLNs really are useful for any career, as finding and maintaining community in any field has advantages. I also really agree on your statement about how everyone feeling valuable is so important for collaboration and community.
I enjoyed reading your reflection of chapter 6. Like you, the most interesting part of the chapter was learning how to keep and maintain a healthy community. It never necessarily occurred to me that there are networks out there that bring no benefit to us as individuals; or aren’t a healthy environment to be in per se. Being involved in a healthy, positive, and meaningful community will bring the most benefit to a person (mentally, emotionally, and even physically) especially as there is a huge issue surrounding cyberbullying. Being sure to take the time to keep a safe space that is encouraging, brings value, and is meaningful is very, very important. Good job!
ReplyDeleteI loved when you said, "When you have a large group of people, you need to make sure that it is a safe place to share opinions and ideas without being criticized or judged. If everyone feels that their part in the group is valued, they will be much more encouraged to keep sharing." This is something that many do not think about but changes the whole workplace. This is why PLNs are great for working and learning, there are people who are either introverted and would rather learn through networks online.
ReplyDeleteHi Kate! I really liked your analysis on chapter 6! I really enjoyed your breakdown on maintaining a healthy community. Creating a safe space is crucial for anyone to feel welcomed and continuing building those relationships and trust will help people flourish in a large group of people.
